Pro Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Strategy (PVC IS), Professor Joe Fraser is responsible for delivering on the University’s Indigenous education priorities under UNE’s strategic plan, Future Fit, and for the Oorala Aboriginal Centre and the services it provides to Indigenous students at UNE. Professor Fraser has extensive experience in Indigenous education and strategic planning, particularly around the accreditation of organisations. He has worked as a senior academic, as a manager of Indigenous university structures, and in community education programs and policy development.
The University of New England Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy 2019-2023 (Employment Strategy) provides a platform to improve employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The UNE Employment Strategy 2019-2023 will guide the development of action and approaches that support culturally aware workplaces and practices, improved employment opportunities, career development options, including academic career paths, for current and prospective Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and students.
Genuinely consulting and collaborating with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities where UNE conducts its business is an integral part of UNE. Adopting a strengths-based approach by consulting with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in the design, delivery and evaluation of strategies that build on and enhance the capacity of the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and further solidify our working relationships with them.
About the role
The Professor of Indigenous Australian Health is a key new leadership position within the Faculty. The position reports to the Dean and has a close working relationship with all members of the Faculty senior leadership group, discipline leads and course coordinators, and with the leadership of the Oorala Aboriginal Centre. This position has been established to ensure that Indigenous Australian Health is deeply embedded in the curricula of every program we offer. It will be the role of the Professor of Indigenous Australian Health to lead this cross-disciplinary project, and to develop and deliver on strategic initiatives across the Faculty, and to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to develop pathways to our Faculty for both students and staff.
About you
We are seeking a vibrant, innovative and collaborative senior academic leader, with a health background, a track record of achievement of results, and personal traits including agility and determination. Experience in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community engagement and developing and executing curriculum uplift would be advantageous. You will thrive in an interdisciplinary team and enjoy mentoring junior staff and providing support for students at both coal face and systems levels.
