About This Opportunity 

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Lecturer in Philosophy to join the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry. The primary purpose of the position is to engage in teaching in Philosophy and further develop specialist ethics teaching in programs outside the School.

In this role, you will focus your efforts on growing your profile in teaching, research, service and engagement. At this level you may coordinate or lead the activities of other staff and contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students. As a teaching and research academic at level B you will aspire to achieve national recognition in your field of research.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching: Contribute to the development of new programs and course material in the area of focus, by consulting with program advisors and stakeholders and ensuring courses are engaging, relevant and contemporary.
  • Teach across different settings and actively contribute towards educational practice and innovative curriculum design, including online learning and alternative teaching methods.
  • Coordinate courses, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials, and undertake assessment and marking for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
  • Research: Develop an independent research program to achieve national recognition for and impact in research.
  • Work with colleagues and postgraduates in the development and conduct of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.
  • Supervision: Contribute to the supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students.
  • Citizenship and Service: Actively develop partnerships by fostering relationships with colleagues, industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position for up to 3 years.

This is a teaching & research academic position at Academic Level B. The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $104,579 – $124,187 plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $122,358 – $145,299 per annum

About You  

  • Applicants must possess a PhD in a relevant field (Bioethics, Moral and Political Philosophy, Practical Philosophy or Applied Ethics).
  • Evidence of a high level of quality teaching at undergraduate level (lecturing, tutoring) in Moral and Political Philosophy, and Practical Philosophy or Applied Ethics.
  • A developing reputation and track record of high-quality publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.
  • Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.
  • Experience in course coordination, and contribution to the development and continuous innovation of new programs, curriculum design and course materials in the discipline area.
  • Evidence of a high level of quality of teaching ethics in undergraduate and postgraduate programs outside the School in the areas of Data Science, Health Science, Public Health, Biomedical Science, and Business Analytics.
  • Willingness to provide leadership in the further development of specialist ethics teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate programs outside the School.
  • A growing record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion in the fields of Moral and Political Philosophy, and Practical Philosophy or Applied Ethics.  
  • Experience in meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with active contributions to external activities.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Evidence of good citizenship, and adherence to UQ values.

Desirable

  • Experience in convening large first year courses in Philosophy.
  • The ability to teach existing courses, including PHIL2210 Environmental Philosophy and PHIL3630 Advanced Moral and Political Philosophy.
